While traveling through the beautiful island of Bali, we were able to visit a local coffee plantation. It was so interesting to see the coffee berries and beans at each stage of the growing process. My favorite part of the tour was seeing all of the biodiversity that surrounded the farm. All of the added flavors to the coffee (cinnamon, vanilla, coconut), were grown in the same plantation, along with an array of spices, herbs, teas, and other fruits and vegetables. It was such a beautiful example of a farm producing sustainable crops, that not only produce a delicious product, but also help to enrich the soil and add nutrients back into the earth.
This sweet Balinese woman is roasting the coffee beans by hand, over an open flame. It was very cool to watch them roast, and to hear them sizzle. Yum! Once the beans are roasted, they use the mallet to grind the coffee beans.
